THE STORY
Finding Billman joins composer Robert Paterson and Euclid Quartet violinist Jameson Cooper as they follow a mystery nearly ten years in the making. A chance encounter with Robert’s music led a stranger to commission a $30,000 string quartet. Rob wrote it. The Euclid Quartet rehearsed and performed it. But the man who made it possible never responded to the finished work.
The film follows the music from the blank page into rehearsal, performance, and the recording studio while Robert and Jamie travel across the country in search of Billman. The journey begins with a simple question: Did he ever hear the music?
THE MUSIC / EUCLID QUARTET
The Euclid Quartet — violinists Jameson Cooper and Aviva Hakanoglu, violist Luis Enrique Vargas, and cellist Justin Goldsmith — are longtime advocates for contemporary music. They have performed, recorded, and carried Robert Paterson’s work forward for years, making them central to both the music and the story of Finding Billman.
THE JOURNEY: WHAT THE SEARCH CHANGED
For nearly a decade, Rob and the quartet built assumptions around Billman’s silence. The search challenges those assumptions and leads to surprising moments along the way.
The greater surprise is not simply who Billman is, but how far one decision traveled: into a score, performances, a recording, a road trip, and relationships between people who otherwise may never have met.
WHERE THE FILM IS NOW
Finding Billman is now in post-production. Principal photography is largely complete, with remaining filming focused on Rob’s continuing composing process and the release of the professionally recorded album. The assembly edit begins in fall 2026, with completion targeted for June 2027 and festival submissions beginning in the second half of 2027 for the 2028 festival season.

Finding Billman is currently in post-production. Contributions help support the edit, sound design, color, legal review, final delivery, and the remaining filming needed to complete the story.

Chelly Campbell is the director, writer, and producer of Finding Billman, her first feature-length documentary. Her work focuses on creative process and how art is made, sustained, and carried forward over time. She approaches contemporary classical music as an outsider, using curiosity and close observation to invite a broader audience into the story.
An Associate Director on national broadcasts including LIVE! with Kelly and Mark and Good Morning America, Chelly has been recognized with a Peabody Award, multiple Emmy Awards, and a Directors Guild of America Award.
Robert Paterson
Composer / Primary Subject / Music Consultant
Robert Paterson is an American composer whose orchestral, chamber, vocal, and theatrical music is performed widely in the United States and internationally. His work is known for rhythmic drive, color, wit, and meticulous craftsmanship, and has been presented by ensembles including the Minnesota Orchestra, Buffalo Philharmonic, Nashville Opera, Albany Symphony, and Musica Sacra.
